Writer's Block: Chemistry test

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 8:18 PM
I've never done this before but I'm bored and gmail has locked me out of my account, so.

Has your idea of the perfect romantic partner changed with age? Do you think we can teach ourselves to desire partners who are better for us or are we constrained by the laws of attraction?

View 292 Answers

I mean, when I was younger I didn't think that much about the perfect romantic partner. It was something I always sort of pushed to the back of my mind. But I mean, I always said I would want someone who made me laugh, someone who was nice and easy to talk to. That hasn't changed. I think my physical type has changed some, but more because I've finally let myself want what I want without trying to ignore it. I don't think you can really teach yourself to be attracted to someone. You either are or you aren't.

Dear Yuletide Writer...

Thank you SO much for writing a story for me!

I'm very easy to write for. I like most sorts of stories: humour, angst, serious drama, plot, short or long, established relationships or first times, smutty or not smutty. The thing that I like that's common to all these types of stories is character exploration. Show me something about a character, a side to them that is maybe hinted at in the canon, or something unexpected, or dig deeper into a canon relationship. If you take a look at my website, you'll see that I mostly write (and mostly read) slash, but I've also written (and read) het and gen and I'm happy to read slash, het or gen in any of the fandoms that I've requested.

The only true squick I have is for graphic descriptions of blood/gore. It's fine if the story requires someone to be injured - just don't dwell lovingly of the details and I'll be able to keep reading without a problem. *g*

Panic at the Disco, who are signed to your label, Decaydance, recently lost two members when Ryan Ross and Jon Walker left to start the Young Veins. Why didn't you sign their new band?

What we said was if you want to be on Decaydance, that's fine with us, and if you want to go elsewhere, that's fine. That part I can tell you for sure. I'm not sure what [distributing label] Atlantic has said because they'd upstreamed to Atlantic.

So it wasn't like some horrible split?

No, and people really want it to be. At the end of the day, two different groups wanted to play different kinds of music and wanted to do different things and that's all it was. Everyone likes the controversy, everyone likes for it to be big and weird, and honestly, it's not like that. I talked to Ryan on the phone the other day.

Peeeeeeeeete, thankyouthankyou. ♥♥

Also, speaking of his stupid band, my Believers Never Die pre-order came!! I AM WEARING MY AWESOME SHIRT OF AWESOME. And I while I tried so, so hard to read Patrick's tl;dr about recording TTTYG and whatnot, all my brain kept thinking was, "OMG, his precious little handwriting!! ♥___♥" &them;

American Idol. Huh. Who knew? ;-D

OK. So, I hardly ever watch TV. Oh, I watch a TON of shows, but very rarely live. I tend to download or just buy the boxed season DVD sets. And that works out well enough. But it means that I never really see commercials & I'm often behind on things. Then add in the fact that I don't DO reality TV. If I want reality? I go outside. Which means I've never seen American Idol & have no real clue who most of the AI people are or what they do.

But. This has now changed. Goddamnit. [info]freakykat's been gleefully filling my head w/ the shiny that is Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, & few others whose names temporarily escape me. Whee! But I'm still not gonna watch the show. I think.

46 / 50 Books. 92% done!

Title: The Many Hands
Author: Dale Smith
"Edinburgh, 1759.
The Nor' Loch is being filled in. If you ask the soldiers there, they'll tell you it's a stinking cesspool that the city can do without. But that doesn't explain why the workers won't go near the place without an armed guard.
That doesn't explain why they whisper stories about the loch giving up its dead, about the minister who walked into his church twelve years after he died...
It doesn't explain why, as they work, they whisper about a man called the Doctor.
And about the many hands of Alexander Monro."
Pages: 241
Started: November 10
End: November 12
Rating: As you may have guess this was another Doctor Who book, and like the other ones that I've read I really liked it. The one added bonus about this book is that it's set all in one day, so it was fast paced, unlike the other ones that cover a couple of days with down time. ♥♥♥1/2

Yuletide, oh my goodness

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 2:09 AM
OMG, I'm gonna be flailing my head off for the rest of the month now that Yuletide has gone off. This is hands down my favorite part of the year, panic over nanowrimo included (one day behind!!) and this year, I got a great assignment again. :) Now I only have to stop myself from trying to write the other prompts before my first is ready. I'm sure gonna try to write some short ones for the Madness at least.

As to my own requests: O.O I was actually half expecting I'd have to redo them as I was the lone requester of most if not all of them. *boggles* If my writer reads this (hiiiii!) thank you so much! I chose the fandoms of my heart this time around so I'm happy I get something. :D The drama series are the ones I've marathoned and loved this year (except for Mop Girl, which was two years or something ago) and I'm itching for fics for them. And the Cheysuli series... Well, I've been in love with those pairings forever and ever and ever. *spins around* Yeah, happy all around. :D

Have you read this book?

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 8:12 PM
A while back I made a post asking you all about books to read on the Arthurian legend. I wanted to thank you all again for giving me so many great recommendations!

Anyway, just yesterday I was cleaning up my room when I came across a pile of books that I bought at a used book sale a year or so ago. One book in particular caught my attention:

The Coming of the King: A Novel of Merlin by Nikolai Tolstoy.

The copy I own is a paperback edition, and is about 630 pages long. This is the summary, as provided by Wikipedia:

Cut to avoid any possible spoilers )

Also according to Wikipedia, Tolstoy planned on this story eventually evolving into a trilogy; however as of 1989 work was delayed, so I highly doubt we will see any of the sequels in the future.

That being said, have any of you read this book? Have you tried and failed? What's your opinion?

Hmm. So to hang on every #Chicon tweet or play some WoW? Decisions decisions. I guess I could watch the Lady Gaga "Bad Romance" video a couple thousand more times.

OMG yawl. I found an awesome pair of Justins at the second hand western store today. The PINK's even growing on me the longer I wear them. I don't own one shred of clothing that is pink. And I forgot how comfortable a good pair of boots can be. All I have any more are laceups, and I don't even think they sell those any more. I'm so out of touch.

However, I still have absolutely no desire to listen to country music.

....

“Bob escaped that Genii prison,” Joe says. “He dug his way out of that underground bunker with his bare hands.”

“Joe,” Frank shakes his head, “Joe, you fucking exploded the shit out of that place first.”

Joe blinks at him. “Oh. Oh, yeah, that was pretty cool, you’re right,” he says, but despite his words he seems mostly dejected, and Ray can relate. They all can, really, because Bob was really good at keeping them together, getting done what needed to be done, competent and focused and solid and always there.

They’re silent then, staring down at the commissary table. No one wants to think about Bob being gone, but it’s the kind of gaping hole that’s hard to ignore.
